Once again the loyal opposition chose to ignore the facts on the ground because it does not match their 3 year old narrative of defeat. General Petraeus was again magnificent and clear about the realities of the progress that has been made to date, the obstacles to be overcome, and the consequences of pulling out - i.e., creating defeat from victory. Just watching career politicians who should have retired long ago reinforces why I am running for Congress. We need regular folks who will bring common sense to the proceedings.
There is now study out done by two researchers at Harvard that shows when bad news and criticism of the War in Iraq hits our news, the amount of violence goes up as our very savvy enemy seeks to win the PR war over here as the only way to achieve victory over there. It is irresponsible for our political leaders to keep endangering our troops, Iraqi forces, and innocent civilians to win a political power struggle here. No matter the prize our career politicians seek when seeking our defeat, no reward is worth their undermining of the sacrifice we all have had to bear to win the freedom of an entire country from decades of a brutal dictatorship and for us to have a stabilizing presence in the region.
That sacrifice falls with the most weight on our soldiers and their loved ones. We must honor their giving of all by completing the mission successfully. If we achieve anything less due to the machinations of politicians in Washington, then they are spitting on those troops and their families as surely as they did when our Vietnam Vets returned home having earned honor but given spite.
Politics must change. We are the change.
It is ironic that Democrats are ignoring the advice of their leader in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination: ‘Words do matter”. Senator Chuck Schumer demonstrated this lack of understanding of the responsibility of leaders to think and consider the consequences before speaking. Senator Schumer likened President Bush to President Herbert Hoover who presided over the beginning of the Great Depression. Schumer forgets much about the present and about the past.
President Hoover signed a massive tax hike similar to the ones proposed by Obama and Clinton and supported by our current Representative which plunged the nation deeper and deeper into the Great Depression rather than ending it. We are currently in an up-to-now soft economy which could lead to a mild recession and President Bush has already pushed through an economic stimulus package, which in one of their few productive acts to date, this Congress passed. In all likelihood, the U.S. Economy will be rebounding by fall and I hope the American voters will remember which career politicians put their political self interest about the needs of we the people. It is time to hold them accountable across the country and here in the 5th District for their words and inaction.
In the present, Senator Schumer either doesn’t care or is unaware that our economy is dependent on the confidence of us, the consumers, and by making such analogies, he is working hard to create a deep recession. Any political leaders who work to proclaim doom and gloom on any subject in the marketplace of ideas to manipulate the regular folks need to be held accountable at the ballot box come this fall.
As long as we keep hiring career politicians to represent us, we will keep getting the same results and nobody, particularly here in the 5th District of Missouri, is happy with the status quo.
It is time to elect a voice from the people to Congress.
Donna and I had the wonderful experience of attending 3 Pro-Life events this past week. On Thursday, it was Kansans for Life 6th annual banquet with Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, as the main speaker. There was also a preacher from Wichita who was on fire! She is coordinating an event down there April 4th & 5th that those who believe in protecting the unborn should put on their calendars.
On Friday, the Black Americans for Life had their first annual awards banquet and Dr. King was again the featured speaker. What a crowd! There was not enough room for the almost 300 people who showed up. It was wonderful to see so many African-Americans concerned about the devastation abortion has visited on their community.
Lastly, on Saturday morning we took part in a prayer vigil at the 109th and Roe Planned Parenthood abortion mill. It was gratifying to see so many folks from both dinners show up to witness for the unborn. As always I am struck by the compassion that those who believe in life have for women who have been and are being manipulated by a multi-billion industry.
Make no mistake folks, for abortion clinics, the bottom line is the bottom line.
Congress is now on a 12 day recess. Before leaving they had plenty of time to rename Post Offices and pass resolutions congratulating athletic teams on well earned accomplishments. They even had time to hold hearings on steroids in Major League baseball and listen to a he said-he said argument between Roger Clemons and his former trainer.
What they didn’t have time to do, understandable since Congress has only been in session a very few weeks before deciding it was time for a break, was to protect us from the enemy who is fighting our soldiers abroad and trying to kill our loved ones here. Congress went on vacation without renewing the survelliance act and by their inaction have left all of us in the sights of our Islamofascist enemies. Enough! It is time for a change in Washington, DC. It is time to fire the career politicians who play games with our lives, who do not see the threat to our country, who fiddle while our enemies plan, now safely hidden from the eyes and ears of our intelligence community.
It is time to pick up the phone and fire up the email. Our Representatives don’t need a vacation, they need to earn their pay. It is time to demand Congress return to DC and pass this protection for the folks. Then I would ask you to look around and, if your Representative is part of the problem, find a candidate to believe in, contribute to their campaign, volunteer to get them elected. Do not stay on the sidelines - these people are playing Russian Roulette with our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
As a Marine veteran who volunteered to defend America in the mid-1970’s, I watched with frustration the unfolding controversy fomented by the Berkeley, California City Council’s disrespect of our Marines. First they provided a reserved parking space for Code Pink directly in front of the Marine Corps recruiting office to aid Code Pink in their harassment of those doing their patriotic duty to defend their country by joining the Marines.
When that didn’t scare the Marines away, the Berkeley City Council sent a letter that said the local Marine Corps recruiting office was an “uninvited and unwelcome” intrusion. In my opinion, a disgusting display of left wing hatred and intolerance for the very folks who protect the rights of those politicians to political free speech and action. The kicker is that when their Federal earmarks were then threatened, they folded like a bad chair and by a 7-2 vote; the City Council retracted its statements. So much for conviction. Those on the left who only tolerate one point of view are always stunned when there are consequences to their words and actions.
We do have the right of free political speech and I defend that right. I also believe we must be prepared to stand by those words and actions or we should not act. Those of us who cherish our Bills of Rights must realize we are in a fight for our culture with those who would deny the rights of the free practice of religion and free political speech with new hate crimes legislation and the reinstatement of the misnamed ‘Fairness Doctrine’. Please join our campaign to send one of the folks to Washington to protect our basic rights.
In regards this particular incident, I, as a Marine veteran, will not be satisfied until the City Council of Berkeley, California issues a public apology and thanks our Marines for being willing to sacrifice their lives to protect our freedoms and those we love.
What a wonderful turnout and event! Flying in the face of the current talk of the difficulty of getting folks down to the Power and Light District we had an overflow crowd of supporters for our kickoff fund raiser. Our heartfelt thanks go to Phil and LeeAnn Orscheln for hosting such a fantastic gathering. Their generosity and kindness made the evening.
Last Thursday, on a bitterly cold Kansas City evening with ice still here and there on the area roads, supporters trekked to an unfamiliar area and paid their own parking, walking through the frigid landscape to join with our campaign at Vinino Italian Restaurant at 1320 Grand. We had 95 contributors join in and have a great time at the wine tasting enjoying the uniquely delicious hors d’ouevres the master chef prepared. It was such an encouragement to realize they all turned out because they believe in our candidacy – on such a night we were the only draw. Wow!
We are so grateful to our generous Grand Cru sponsors, Ann Dickinson, John and Kelly Murphy, and Scott and Beverly Shane.
Our deep appreciation also goes to our Private Reserve sponsors, Wayne and Chris Cooper, Bud and Betty Hertzog, and Gale and Mary Oleson.
Our warm thanks is sent out to our Select sponsors, Karl Blumenhorst, Bob Brown, Don and Leila Cohoon, Bunk and Diane Farrington, Dreyfus and Marie Froe, Doug Herriott, Berry Jennings, Jon and Jackie Kreker, and Bill and Carol Lewis.
Lastly, it touched Donna and my hearts that so many of the folks took time from their busy lives to reach out to us with encouragement and support. We are blessed.
After an evening of fun and fellowship, my friend, Sonny Gibson, introduced me and brought tears to my eyes with his poignant remarks on our friendship. I was able to garner even more support with my remarks by keeping them brief. :) All in all, our candidacy is standing tall on the efforts of all involved in the last election and we are well positioned to benefit from the change in the political winds blowing through the district. This is our time.
Politics must change. We are the change.
What a time to be running for political office - the winds of change are blowing throughout our great country. The folks are fed up. In 2006 during our first run, voters wanted anybody but a Republican which led to a defeat of historic proportions for the Republican Party with the folks hoping that by giving power to the Democrats somehow the way our government did business would change. It did not work!
For those of you who still have our campaign card from 2006, look on the back at the last line - ‘Politics must change…We are the change.’ The basic message of our campaign has been and is that to change our representation for the better we have to change the type of people we send to Washington. As long we send career politicians, no change will occur. It is time to send regular folks to Congress starting here in the 5th District.
This is our time. We have the right candidate with the right message for this election. It is time to bring innovation, fresh thinking, the wisdom of regular folks to bear on the problems we face in this district, this country, this world. I ask that you join us and share your solutions, your piece of our collective wisdom. Together we will find the answers to the challenges which vex us.
As long as we keeping sending the same politicians to DC, we will get the same results.
Today is our day, let’s go!
again.
As the legislative year for Congress draws rapidly to a close we take a peek at another ‘do-nothing’ Congress. Though the new leadership during last year’s election season promised to achieve a bold agenda during the first 100 days of the new Congress little to no progress on that agenda has been achieved in almost a year of inactivity. Though the Democrats have a strong hold on both Houses of Congress they have been unable or unwilling to move their stated agenda forward. It is business as usual in DC.
11 out of 12 appropriations bills are languishing setting a record for fiscal incompetence. The earmarks still get through while the Alternate Minimum Tax will haunt over 20 million Americans this tax season thanks to the Democratic leadership dragging their feet on a solution while the pace of renaming post offices, office buildings, bridges and highways continues unabated. Style points in debates are more important than statesmanship and getting the work of the people done.
It is time to replace these career politicians with regular folks.
Merry Christmas to all my readers. I appreciate all of you taking the time to read my blog and leave comments.
During this Christmas season we have so much to be grateful for: the surge in Iraq has worked and is continueing to work, the President has so far been able to resist the Democratic Congress’ attempts to subvert our efforts to win the fight against terrorists and insurgents there and to establish a democratic government able to withstand internal and external enemies, our economy remains amazingly robust in spite of the mortgage industry’s difficulties and real income continues to grow, more high profile terrorists attacks in the United States have been thwarted and we have been blessed to have had no attacks since the decimation of 9/11 due to the diligence of our intelligence agencies working in partnership with law enforcement, more and more conservative leaders like Sarkozy in France who are supportive of the United States continue to be elected in country after country…the list goes on and on.
I encourage you to count your blessings and in the Spirit of the Season find those who are not as blessed and help one person or one family through a difficult time and continue to be there for them throughout the New Year.
May God bless all of you.
Laura Ingraham bestowed her Power to the People award to 73 year old grandmother, Frances Semler, who has stood up to a secular-progressive assault on her appointment to the Kansas City Parks Board. The over 2,000 attendees at the September 18th 710 KCMO event were on their feet before her name was announced and remained standing, cheering until Frances left after several minutes in front of the stage. It was a fitting recognition for one of the regular folks standing firm.
